Tommy’s story
Tommy, an 8-year-old primary school student, experienced a significant bereavement in his family, which deeply affected his emotional wellbeing. Following the loss, Tommy struggled with severe anxiety and a lack of confidence, leading to frequent absences from school. Recognising his need for support, his teachers referred him to the JHF for mentoring.
Initial Challenges
Tommy’s initial sessions with his mentor were marked by hesitation and reluctance. Tommy found it difficult to express his feelings and often withdrew from conversations.
Building Trust
Tommy’s mentor focused on creating a safe and trusting environment where he felt heard. They spent the first few sessions simply talking and engaging in light activities that Tommy enjoyed, such as drawing and playing board games. This approach helped Tommy feel more comfortable and gradually opened up about his feelings of loss, grief and anxiety. It also helped his mentor to understand more about Tommy’s interests and activities that he enjoyed.
Exploring New Activities
As their relationship strengthened, his mentor introduced new strategies to help Tommy manage his anxiety. They practiced simple mindfulness techniques which he could use day to day. Tommy’s mentor also encouraged him to set small, achievable goals through the JHF’s Project Growth programme. Over time, Tommy felt a sense of achievement as he completed the project growth module. He beamed as he showed his family his certificate of completion!
Progress and Growth
Over time, Tommy began to show significant improvements in his wellbeing. He started attending school more regularly and actively participated in class. His teachers noticed a marked increase in his confidence and willingness to engage with his peers. Tommy also developed a toolkit of strategies to manage his anxiety, which he could use both in and out of school.
Tommy’s mentoring journey highlights the profound impact of a supportive and understanding mentor. By building a trusting relationship and gradually introducing new activities, his mentor helped Tommy navigate his grief and anxiety. Tommy’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship in fostering resilience and confidence in young students facing emotional challenges.
Julie’s Journey to Full-Time School and Beyond
Julie, a 16 year old student, found it extremely challenging to attend school due to difficulties in coping with the classroom environment. Julie’s anxiety and discomfort in the classroom led to frequent absences, impacting her academic progress and a feeling of loneliness.
Julie was referred to the JHF and paired with a mentor to provide personalised support. Initially, Julie was reluctant to engage with her mentor, but the mentor’s patient and empathetic approach gradually built trust.
Her mentor dedicated the first few sessions to listening to Julie and understanding her interests and discovered Julie’s passion for photography. They incorporated photography into their sessions, creating a social story that helped Julie express her feelings about school. They discussed strategies to make Julie more comfortable in a classroom setting by exploring sensory needs, such as using noise-cancelling headphones and choosing a seat away from the window to minimise distractions. Her mentor accompanied Julie to some classes, providing support and reassurance. Over time, Julie’s attendance improved as she became more comfortable in the classroom setting.
Julie took numerous photographs during her sessions, which she and her mentor compiled into a portfolio. This process helped Julie recognise her talent and boosted her self-esteem. By the end of the mentoring sessions, Julie was attending school regularly and she even discovered a photography club at school, where she shared her passion with her peers and made new friends.
By focusing on her interests and providing tailored strategies, Julie’s mentor helped her overcome her initial reluctance and build the confidence needed to thrive in a classroom environment. Julie’s story is a testament to the power of understanding and addressing individual needs to foster academic and personal growth.
