Supported Work Experience

We are dedicated to providing young people with valuable, mentor-supported work experience placements that typically last 6-8 weeks. Our program arranges these sessions with mentors who accompany and guide participants, ensuring they gain practical insights and build confidence in a real-world setting.

In addition to hands-on experience, we offer comprehensive employability support, including CV writing, interview preparation, and career advice. Our goal is to equip young people with the skills and knowledge they need to make a strong start in their careers and explore the working world with confidence. By fostering a supportive environment, we help them develop not only professional skills but also a sense of self-assurance and ambition for their future.

Chris’ Journey from School Struggles to Work Experience Success

Chris, a 16 year old young student, struggled with sporadic school attendance and engagement, feeling disconnected and unmotivated.

His inconsistent participation hindered his academic progress, and he doubted the relevance of his education.

Having learnt about Chris during their mentoring journey, the JHF arranged a mentor-supported work experience placement at the JHF Orchard outdoor learning centre to provide practical, hands-on experience. Tasks included pruning trees, replacing the greenhouse, dead hedge laying, gardening, and general Orchard maintenance.

The work experience placement proved to be a turning point for Chris. From the outset, he demonstrated a remarkable change in behaviour and attitude:

• Consistent Engagement: Chris attended his placement regularly, showing newfound commitment.

• Punctuality and Independence: He developed travel skills, arriving on time every day.

• Problem-Solving Skills: Chris tackled challenges with enthusiasm, demonstrating strong problem-solving abilities.

• Mentor Relationship: Initially hesitant about working with a mentor, Chris gradually overcame his doubts. He built a strong rapport with his mentor, who provided guidance and support, further boosting Chris’s confidence and enthusiasm.

• Responsibility and Independence: Chris embraced new responsibilities, showing maturity and independence.

Chris’s work experience reignited his interest in learning and equipped him with valuable life skills. His journey from disengagement to commitment highlights the impact of practical experiences on personal and academic growth.
