Group Projects and Workshops

Alongside our 1:1 mentoring and tutoring support, the JHF also runs a number of groups and workshops

Intergenerational Activity Sessions

In April 2023, the JHF teamed up with Alive Activities charity who connected our youth charity with Winash, a local residential care home.

A small group of young people participate in weekly term-time sessions, engaging in various facilitated activities with the residents. These heartwarming intergenerational sessions have been so much fun and fostered meaningful friendships.

So far, activities have included:

  • Karaoke
  • Biscuit decorating
  • Music therapy
  • Show & tell
  • Chocolate tasting
  • Animal meet & greet
  • Bubble Olympics
  • Sweet pong
  • Singalongs
  • And many more!

We hope to expand these sessions to other homes around North Somerset.

“I regularly attend a weekly session set up by JHF and Winash this helps me build my social skills, confidence and I feel part of something truly special!

The residents are really lovely and I love hearing their stories, and they love to hear what we have been up to.

My favourite memory is singing karaoke with the residents, something I wouldn’t have ever done before! I think of most of the residents as friends, they even sang me happy birthday!”

Lego® Based Therapy

Lego® Based Therapy is a collaborative, play-based intervention designed to enhance social skills in children with social difficulties. Originally created for children with autism, it has since been adapted for children with related challenges, typically involving groups of 2-3 children.

In this therapy, children are encouraged to build together, each taking on specific roles such as engineer, supplier, or builder. These roles provide a structured environment where children can practice social interactions safely, fostering the development of social skills.

Sessions also include opportunities for more natural play through freestyle building. The facilitator’s role is to encourage positive social interactions and the development of social skills.

Lego® Based Therapy aims to:

  • Promote the development of appropriate social, communication and play skills.
  • Utilise children’s strengths to help develop areas of difficulty.
  • Encourage an understanding of reciprocal relationship building through play.
  • Develop social communication skills such as sharing, turn-taking, following rules, using names and problem-solving.

The JHF Social Group

At JHF, we deeply value the transformative impact of 1:1 mentoring and tutoring. However, we also listen closely to the voices of the young people we serve. One such voice expressed a strong desire for opportunities to meet and socialise with peers.

Recognising the importance of this feedback, we took it to heart and launched the JHF Social Group. This initiative aims to foster connections and build a sense of community among young people.

Stay tuned for our 2024/2025 schedule, which will feature a variety of exciting activities designed to bring everyone together. Watch this space for updates!
